Search Tips for Building Effective Queries
|
Common Errors
-
New Drug Module - Archived Records
By default, the New Drug database shows records updated after January 1, 2000. If you want to see all data, including records updated before 2000, you must click the ALL RESULTS radio button above the Keywords box on the New Drug query screen.
-
Misspelled words
To avoid errors use the fewest letters that would describe a word, and place an asterisk at the end of the word, such as angiog* for angiogenesis, angiogenic, etc.
-
Clear Previously Used Fields
Make sure to clear all fields on the query screen before entering values for a new search. To clear the fields quickly, press either of the RESET buttons on the query screen.
Search Tips
-
Try the search using the Keywords box
If the search term you are using does not generate any results, try putting that term in the Keywords text box. Entering a search term in the Keywords generates a special combination search of the database. Keywords searches are not as specific as searches using individual fields so you will get many more records than the more specific searches.
-
Try alternate spellings of terms
To check for terms where there may be some question of the spelling, enter alternate spellings or forms of the word separated by a slash (/). For example, when searching for myelocytic leukemia try entering the following: Myelocytic / Myelogenous / Myelocyte & Leukemia. This results in a search for records with the terms Myelocytic OR Myelogenous OR Myelocyte AND Leukemia. You can also generate the same results searching for the phrase Myelo* & Leukemia.
-
Add or Remove terms from the search box
In general, the more terms entered into the search box, the narrower and more specific the search.
-
Use the Word Wheels
The Word Wheels are lists of terms that are indexed for each search field. They are very helpful, not only for selecting a specific search term, but are also for browsing the entries in a field. For more information on how to use the Word Wheels, see the Word Wheels section of the User Guide.
-
Click on the Query Screen Field Names for descriptions of the search fields
The title in front of each search text box is a link to a help screen that describes that field, as well as any search tips especially relevant to that field.
